Who Played Zoe Slater, And How Was She Cast?

Wikipedia explains the Slaters came out of improvisation workshops run by writer Tony Jordan and producer John Yorke, with thirty London actors mucking in.

Ryan, 16, got Zoe. Mal Young, the BBC‘s head of drama series, then, said the show did not “have enough solid families in the soap; there were a lot of fractured families and people who were alone.”

The Slaters landed on 18 September 2000: Dad Charlie (Derek Martin), sisters Kat (Jessie Wallace), Lynne (Elaine Lordan) and Little Mo (Kacey Ainsworth), and Gran Mo Harris (Laila Morse).

Michelle Ryan’s Early Life

Storylines That Made Zoe A Legend

October 2001. “You ain’t my mother!” Kat’s answer: “Yes, I am.”

The backstory was grim: Kat had been physically assaulted by her uncle Harry Slater (Michael Elphick) and fell pregnant at 13, in 1983. Charlie and Viv raised Zoe as their own. Kat slashed her wrists, and Zoe bolted. That episode won Best Single Episode at the 2002 British Soap Awards.

Zoe ended up sleeping rough until a pimp called Roxy Drake forced her into prostitution. Kat turned up on Christmas Day and headbutted Roxy to free her. Her engagement to Anthony Trueman (Nicholas Bailey) fizzled, and in 2002 Ryan was rested on doctor’s orders, so their secret wedding plot was rewritten.

Then, on New Year’s Eve 2003, the episode was filmed in Scotland. Zoe and mate Kelly Taylor (Brooke Kinsella) kissed on freezing moors after their minibus crashed. It drew 9.5 million viewers, 44% of the available audience. Kinsella shrugged off the fuss: “It’s not a gratuitous ratings getting move, it’s not some kind of big lesbian kiss. It’s the way two best friends who have a lot of love for each other show their emotions.”

Dirty Den, Dennis, And The 2005 Exit

Zoe fell for Dennis Rickman (Nigel Harman), faked a pregnancy on Den Watts’s advice, then slept with Den (Leslie Grantham) to make the lie real. Dennis walked in.

Chrissie Watts (Tracy-Ann Oberman) talked her into an abortion, then into revenge, and Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) joined in for the 20th anniversary episode. Zoe clobbered Den with a metal doorstop and ran, sure she’d killed him. She hadn’t. Chrissie did and was charged; Sam went on the run.

Ryan’s exit was confirmed on 29 January 2005, and Zoe left for Ibiza that June. “Everyone knew it was time for me to go and I knew it was time for me to move on,” she told The Sun. She’d always treated the soap as an apprenticeship, she told the Bristol Evening Post.

Twenty Years Away From Walford

Ryan fronted NBC’s 2007 Bionic Woman reboot as Jaime Sommers, learning Krav Maga, sign language and an American accent. It was binned after eight episodes.

Plenty followed: Nimueh in Merlin, Katherine Reimer in Jekyll, and Lady Christina de Souza in the Doctor Who special “Planet of the Dead” in April 2009, a part she still plays in Big Finish audio dramas. Add Mansfield Park, Covert Affairs, Death in Paradise, Cockneys vs Zombies and the 2025 film Finding My Voice, plus Sally Bowles in Cabaret at the Savoy. She lost Vesper Lynd in Casino Royale to Eva Green.

Comeback talk ran in 2010 and 2011, and Digital Spy reported the BBC batting it away. In 2017 Ryan said Zoe should just be recast. Kat later learned Zoe was in Spain and engaged, and in 2022 Lily tracked her down online, only to be blanked.

2025 Comeback

Then she said yes. Ryan reappeared with no warning on 16 June 2025, in new executive producer Ben Wadey’s first episode, and went full-time from 1 September. Barb figures put 2.2 million on that reveal, with the BBC keeping it off iPlayer.

Heart reported what tipped it: a catch-up with Kacey Ainsworth and Kim Medcalf, and the love for Zoe she found online. “It feels like coming home. After doing my first few scenes, it was like I’d never been away,” she said, adding that “Zoe is a mess.”

She wasn’t wrong. Zoe was shot by a stray bullet, found the twins she abandoned in 2006, Jasmine Fisher and Josh Goodwin, and was stalked by Chrissie. She was even accused of killing Anthony, even though Jasmine had done it in self-defence.

How Zoe Slater Died In 2026

July 2026 brought the news. “We can confirm Zoe Slater will be departing EastEnders later this year. We wish Michelle Ryan all the best for the future,” a spokesperson told RTE.

Ryan told Radio Times she’d signed for one year only and backed killing Zoe off. The end was cruel: a fall, a head hit on bricks, no treatment, and Max Branning walking off when she begged for help. She died in bed in episode 7398 on 10 September 2026, and Kat found her. A standalone Slater and Moon episode followed on 14 September.

In 2020, the Daily Mirror ranked Zoe 59th among the greatest EastEnders characters, and Ryan was shortlisted for Best Actress in 2005.
