Nobody had this on their 2026 bingo card. Santa Monica just announced a brand new God of War game at the PlayStation State of Play titled as “God of War Laufey”, and within about thirty seconds of the trailer dropping, the internet went sideways – partly because the game looks incredible, and partly because Jack Quaid is in it playing a cube that talks.
We’ll get to that.
God of War Laufey is the next mainline entry in the series, and the first thing you need to know is that Kratos is not the main character. Faye is. If that name rings a bell but you can’t quite place it – she’s Kratos’s wife. The one who was already dead when the 2018 game started. The one whose ashes you carried up a mountain for an entire game. Two games, really, given how much her absence shaped Ragnarok. Santa Monica spent years making you feel her loss and now they’re handing you the controller and putting you in her boots.
The story kicks off right after she dies. Faye wakes up somewhere she wasn’t expecting – the Everywhen, which is basically where gods end up when they’re done being alive. It’s not just Norse territory anymore either. Egyptian gods are here. Tibetan mythology. Creatures that are native to the afterlife and don’t exist anywhere else in the series. Sony’s official description puts it like this: the plans Faye set in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are suddenly at risk, and she has to fight through an entire divine afterlife to keep them from falling apart.
The combat looks different too. Faster than what you’re used to from the Norse games, more airborne, less about planting your feet and swinging through everything in front of you. Which makes sense given everything else about this game is operating on a different frequency than its predecessors.

Who Is Jack Quaid Playing In God Of War Laufey?
Here’s where it gets genuinely funny. Phranque, played by Jack Quaid, is a curious cosmic cube with an earnest disposition. He will do whatever it takes to protect his friends and the creatures of the Everywhen.
A cube, the man is playing a cube. And the internet is absolutely losing it over this in the best possible way.
Quaid is 34 years old, son of Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid, and has spent the last several years building one of the more interesting careers in Hollywood. Most people know him as Hughie Campbell from The Boys – the everyman civilian who gets pulled into a world of murderous corporate superheroes and somehow survives. He’s also voiced Brad Boimler in Star Trek: Lower Decks and Superman in My Adventures with Superman, so voice work isn’t new territory for him. But voicing and motion capturing a gelatinous cosmic cube is, safe to say, a first.
Fans on gaming forums immediately started comparing Phranque’s voice to Hughie from The Boys, with one ResetEra user writing “Finally, he has reached his final form.” Someone else pointed out that Santa Monica is apparently doing full motion capture for a cube, which is the kind of detail that makes you appreciate how seriously this studio takes its craft.

The Full Cast Of God Of War Laufey
Quaid isn’t the only name worth talking about here. Deborah Ann Woll returns as Faye, also known as Laufey, reprising a role she previously played in flashbacks and key story moments in God of War Ragnarok. This marks her first time leading a God of War game as the primary playable character. Woll is best known for playing Karen Page in Marvel’s Daredevil, and based on the 20-minute gameplay reveal she’s doing something genuinely different here – a warrior who’s sharp, fast, and carrying a lot of unfinished business with the universe.
Perlina Lau has been cast as Rue, the enchanted ribbon guardian tasked with keeping a devastatingly powerful sword from falling into the wrong hands. So yes – the main trio in this game is a legendary warrior, a talking ribbon, and a sentient cube. God of War has always been willing to be weird, but this is a different kind of weird. It works.

What We Know About The Story
To save the ones she loves, Faye must fight through the afterlife of the gods – the Everywhen – where ruthless gods from across mythology vie for power in a land overflowing with dangerous magic. The gameplay trailer showed Sekhmet from Egyptian mythology and Begtse from Tibetan mythology as apparent villains, though Santa Monica hasn’t confirmed their voice actors yet.
Director Ariel Lawrence – a 17-year Santa Monica veteran who worked on every God of War game including Ghost of Sparta and Ascension – is at the helm. Cory Barlog is still involved as head of creative. So this isn’t a spinoff handed to a smaller team. The people who built this franchise are still running it.
Santa Monica is also working on a remake of the original God of War trilogy, and a live-action TV adaptation is in the works with Amazon Prime.
When Does God Of War Laufey Come Out?
The game doesn’t have a release window yet – just a PS5 target platform and a wishlist page on the PlayStation Store. Which, for a game announced this recently, is about what you’d expect. Sony closed out the State of Play with this reveal, which suggests they’re treating it as a tentpole. Whether that means 2027 or 2028 is anyone’s guess right now.
What’s clear is that Santa Monica is swinging for something different. New protagonist, new mythology, new tone, and a cast that includes Jack Quaid playing a cube who apparently has feelings and wants to protect people. God of War Laufey has no business looking this good this early.
