Why The EasyJet LBA Flight Cancellations Are Happening
In one word, it’s money. EasyJet had a thorough look at its route map, decided Leeds-Bradford wasn’t profitable, and pulled the plug. From now on it’s all about the routes that fill planes.
An EasyJet spokesperson said: “Following a review of our routes from Leeds Bradford Airport, we have made the decision to no longer operate flights from the airport after 5 January. Our focus is on maintaining and developing routes which prove most popular with customers.”
The BBC states that this summer, EasyJet was a titchy 3.3% of Leeds Bradford’s whole network. Jet2 and Ryanair? They shared 83.5% between them. When you’re that small a fish, you’re the one who gets tossed back.
EasyJet’s Tough Year And The Apollo Deal
Look, it’s been a tough year for the airline. The decision to pull out comes despite a strong financial performance for the airline overall, with EasyJet reporting a 16% increase in Q3 headline profit before tax to £236 million. The exit from Leeds Bradford was driven strictly by route optimisation rather than corporate financial distress.
EasyJet is still the UK’s biggest airline by seat capacity. This summer it sold roughly 23.4 million departure seats, up 5.2% on last year.
Which Routes Face The Axe
There are five routes that have to pay the price. Metro provided the full list: Barcelona, Paris, Belfast, Malaga, and Mallorca. Geneva was already withdrawn/removed as a seasonal route.

They will not be cut on the same day. Malaga and Mallorca will bow out in November, as they only ever operated in summer. Geneva hasn’t flown since June and was seasonal anyway.
The Independent confirmed that Barcelona, Paris and Belfast will continue to fly until 5 January. If you check the website, you’ll see that Belfast is bookable up to 4 January, Paris to 1 January, Barcelona to 2 January, and Geneva with no dates left whatsoever.

What Happens To Your EasyJet Booking
Flying before 5 January 2027? Your trip goes ahead, no drama. Booked after that? EasyJet’s already pinged you a message.
The spokesperson added: “We have contacted customers with bookings beyond this date to provide them with advance notice and inform them of their options, including a free transfer to flights from an alternative airport or a refund, and we are very sorry for the inconvenience caused. We value the relationship we have built with Leeds Bradford Airport, and we always keep options for our network under review, with the aim of providing more choice and connectivity where we see demand.”
You have two options: take an EasyJet flight from a different airport at no extra cost, or grab your refund and walk away. As for the airport itself? Leeds Bradford said it had nothing to add to EasyJet’s statement.
Ryanair Steps In With Rescue Fares
Ryanair didn’t hang about. It slapped rescue fares on EasyJet’s entire Leeds Bradford schedule from 5 January 2027, starting at a measly £29.99, bookable right up to the end of February.
And they didn’t hold back either. Ryanair’s director of comms, Jade Kirwan, said: “While EasyJet abandons Leeds Bradford, cutting its full schedule from 5 Jan 2027, Ryanair is saving the day with rescue fares from just £29.99 for affected passengers – particularly those booked to fly easyJet from Leeds Bradford to Malaga, who can now switch to one of Ryanair’s 10 Malaga services per week.”
What It Means For Leeds Bradford Airport
AOL stated that there’s still plenty of choice on the departures board. Jet2, Ryanair, Tui, KLM, Wizz Air and SunExpress are all still flying out of LBA, and Jet2 is Leeds-based, so it isn’t budging. The airport just smashed its busiest year ever, 4.29 million passengers between 2024 and 2025.
Last year it invested £100 million in a terminal, and it has extra shops, seating and lounges. Jet2’s even added Santorini and Preveza for summer 2027. With EasyJet being such a mess here, the dent in revenue is barely a scratch.
Where EasyJet Is Growing Instead
On other regional airports. EasyJet’s rolling out 13 new winter routes across eight regional airports, including Newquay, one of the smallest in the country, and its very first international route from there.
It’s also started flying to Preveza from Manchester, the gateway to Lefkada, aka the “Greek Caribbean”, which took off on 24 June. So these EasyJet LBA flight cancellations aren’t some random strop; they’re one piece of a much bigger reshuffle.
